Infrastructure bill could accelerate Illinois’ economic recovery from COVID-19

Illinois AFL-CIO President Tim Drea joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss how the economy of Illinois is steadily recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, a trend that is expected to continue thanks to the infrastructure bill recently signed by President Biden.

According to Drea, the bill provides $17 billion for the state of Illinois to rebuild roads and bridges, and to invest in mass transit. The infrastructure package will significantly increase the quality of public transit in not only Chicago, but the rest of Illinois thanks to Amtrak improvements.

He also spoke about a construction project in Wolf Point South, located along the Chicago River. The 17-acre lot had been used as a waste yard to store river debris, but is being transformed into three magnificent buildings, which will revitalize the area. Work on the project is being performed entirely by union members, Drea said. AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Fred Redmond recently visited the construction site to stress the importance of union labor.

The project is funded by the AFL-CIO Building Investment Trust, which has funded over $3.9 billion in projects that have created 10.8 million work hours, which have produced over $1.7 billion in wages.
