Illinois’ Climate and Jobs Act will create union jobs and fight climate change

Gina Walsh, Deputy Director of the Mechanical Insulators Labor Management and Cooperative Trust (LMCT), joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the Climate and Jobs Act that was passed last month by the Illinois state legislature.

The Act is designed to help Illinois achieve power sector decarbonization by 2045. It received support from numerous groups and labor unions, including the Mechanical Insulators LMCT, IBEW and the American Federation of Teachers. Unions pushed lawmakers to ensure that good-paying union jobs will be created when Illinois makes its transition to a carbon free society, Walsh said.

The transition to clean energy is inevitable and becomes achievable through the talents and efforts of union members, she added.

Under the law, Project Labor Agreements will be required on all utility, wind and solar projects. The law also includes provisions for Prevailing Wage.
