Ohio Federation of Teachers (OFT) President Melissa Cropper joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss Ohio House Bill 290, the so-called “Backpack Bill.” Critics say it guts public education funding by providing a universal voucher to all students in Ohio regardless of income or the performance of their local public schools.
Cropper explains why this bill has the ability to have a large, negative effect on public education in Ohio and why it could potentially encourage a culture of fraud.
She also spoke about a successful lawsuit brought on by the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) against then U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos for mismanaging the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program and leaving tens of thousands of borrowers with nowhere to turn when their relief was denied.
The AFT won student loan forgiveness for its eight plaintiffs who were originally denied. The win also allows any public service employee who initially applied to the program and was denied a loan to reapply. Cropper discusses what this means for public service employees, especially teachers.
