IBEW Local 103 BM is excited for a pro-labor Biden-Harris administration

Rumors are floating and discussions are being had for who will hold crucial cabinet positions in the incoming Biden-Harris administration. Labor leaders stand amongst the top candidates.

International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 103 Business Manager Lou Antonellis joined AWF Union Podcast to discuss discussions around a local Boston, Mass. politician being named to cabinet position and a recent organizing drive at a Boston casino.

Prospective Secretary of Labor

After years of having an anti-labor Secretary of Labor, Antonellis is confident the Biden administration will nominate a highly qualified, pro-labor Secretary of Labor.

Antonellis said former Laborers Local 223 President and current Boston Mayor Marty Walsh is one of the frontrunners to become the next Secretary of Labor. He knows Mayor Walsh well and said that he would be a massive ally to labor as a whole.

If Mayor Walsh is not selected, Antonellis said he is confident the incoming administration will pick someone worthy of the job.

Encore Boston Harbor

Antonellis then discussed a recent successful organizing drive.

After building the Encore Boston Harbor Casino, a group of their staff voted at 95 percent to become members of Local 103. This adds to the more than 10,000 members and retirees of Local 103.

He said Encore was great to work with. They did not roll out the anti-union messaging, videos and assemblies many have used in the past and stayed neutral as the organizing drive played out.

Currently, IBEW Local 103 is in the contract negotiation phase. They expect to work out a contract in good faith and without any issues.

Moving forward, Local 103 is optimistic about President-elect Biden. He said the Trump administration was a wake up call for many union members and that better days are ahead for the labor movement.
