Ohio Consumers’ Counsel Senior Outreach and Education Program Specialist Andrew Tinkham joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to share energy saving tips during the upcoming holiday season.
Holiday lights can become a significant added utility cost for some consumers. Tinkham suggested putting holiday lights on a timer or a smart plug to control how long the lights are lit. Using LED lights can also significantly reduce the electric bill because of their low energy draw.
To save energy during Thanksgiving, Tinkham suggested using smaller appliances such as a slow cooker, instapot or air fryer, if possible. When using a conventional oven, cook multiple dishes at once.
He also talked about vampire power, otherwise known as standby power, which is electricity used by appliances, chargers and other devices when not in use. He suggested unplugging these devices whenever possible. According to Energy Star, the average household wastes about $100 annually on vampire power.
