How consumers can protect themselves from fraud during the holidays

Cleveland Better Business Bureau President Sue McConnell joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss how listeners can protect themselves from online shopping scams this holiday season.

She described how one consumer was hit with $6,000 in unauthorized charges when he attempted to purchase a specific brand of air fryer off a fraudulent website. The website looked legitimate, and included photos of the air fryers copied from the actual company website. Fortunately, the victim used a credit card, and the money was refunded. McConnell urged listeners to use credit cards when making online purchases because of their fraud protections.

She also warned listeners to be wary of social media ads. Many of these have not been vetted by the social media company and can be scams. She urged listeners to do research before making purchases.

McConnell also cautioned against free gift cards offered by scammers in bulk phishing emails. She urged listeners to not open any unsolicited email offering gift cards.
