HFIAW GP touts veterans as great candidates for building trades apprenticeship programs

Veterans have always been able to find quality employment in the building trades unions and some have even climbed to the top ranks of their respective union.

International Association of Heat and Frost Insulators and Allied Workers General President and Navy veteran Gregory T. Revard joined AWF Union Podcast on Veterans Day to explain how the Insulators are helping veterans find meaningful careers.

Revard served in the Navy for three years. After returning from service he shopped around for jobs in auto plants and elsewhere. After striking out, he found an opening for an insulators apprenticeship. Being the son and nephew of insulators, Revard took the opportunity.

After completing his apprenticeship and becoming involved as an instructor, Revard began to work his way up the union ladder, eventually reaching his current position of General President.

Veteran outreach

Revard said the Insulators Union, and the building trades as a whole, are doing a fairly good job of reaching out to veterans.

Citing programs such as Helmets to Hardhats, he said outreach has improved from when he was first getting his start in the trade.

The insulators do their own outreach work. He said they encourage all veterans to apply for the insulators apprenticeship program or for any of the building trades apprenticeship programs. The comradery is unmatched and veterans make great candidates because of their ability to follow directions, be on-time and work in adverse conditions.
