Harvard students push university to divest from fossil fuels

After nearly a decade of protests and two faculty votes, Harvard University announced this month it would begin to divest its multibillion dollar endowment from fossil fuels. The university pledged to make the endowment greenhouse-gas-neutral by 2050.

Ilana Cohen, a Harvard junior and contributor to The Nation Magazine, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the student and faculty campaign to push Harvard to divest from fossil fuels.

Cohen helped spearhead the fossil fuel divestment campaign on Harvard’s campus. Her article breaking down the campaign, “How Students Pressured Harvard to Divest From Fossil Fuels– and Won,” was published in The Nation this week.

As one of the richest institutions in the country, Harvard’s divestment is a testament to the decline of the fossil fuel industry.

Though Harvard has only committed to divest 2 percent of its $42 billion endowment this year, it is a sizable amount – $840 million, Cohen estimated.

Harvard indicated it will reinvest the money into a green economy, though the University has yet to release details on what that will entail.
