Progressive Populist Editor Jimmy Cullen discussed the lies from President Trump regarding his COVID-19 pandemic relief plan on the Aug. 14 episode of America’s Work Force Radio Podcast.
After negotiations ended with President Trump’s team refusing to make any deal with House Democrats, President Trump announced a series of Executive Orders instead of allowing congressional action to occur.
President Trump’s Executive Orders
Cullen said the President announced the suspension of payroll taxes, which provide funding to social security and medicare, through the end of the year. He also extended federal unemployment assistance of $300 per week, half of what was authorized from March through July. Lastly, student loan payments will freeze through the end of 2020.
Cullen said these lofty plans are unlikely to be legal, as Congress has the power of the purse and it is their job to make changes to taxes and spending.
Payroll tax cut problems
He then hit on the major problems with ending the payroll tax, which funds social security and medicare.
Cullen also explained that payroll taxes may be deferred on, but the tax will still be due at the end of the year. Cullen also said, the payroll tax cut does not help the millions who are out of work, as they are not on a payroll.
Employers will not benefit from this cut either, since congress deferred the employer portion of the payroll tax through 2021 in the CARES Act.
Lastly, Cullen spoke about the lack of leadership the country has observed with the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.
