Grandson of FDR says social security is in trouble under Trump

Since its inception in 1935, Social Security has been under attack.

The attacks have never been this bold however, as the current administration is actively taking measures to cut funding to the insurance program.

James Roosevelt Jr., the grandson of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Vice-Chair for Advisory Board for the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare (NCPSSM)  joined America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss his grandfather’s legacy and the future of Social Security.

Roosevelt admitted the Trump Administration is more conservative than many people had originally thought. Trump has achieved goals conservatives have been fighting for for decades. Now, they are in a position to make cuts to Social Security, Medicare and other government assistance programs.

The future of Social Security

Compared to previous presidents, Roosevelt said the Trump administration has been very successful in its attacks on Social Security. Due to the promise to permanently cut the payroll tax, the Trump administration will succeed in seeing social security run out by 2023.

Due to this threat, the 38-year old NCPSSM has endorsed a presidential candidate for the first time in its history.

They endorsed Joe Biden because of the actions of the current administration and the promise by Biden to expand Social Security and Medicare benefits. The expanded benefits would include additional income to those who have used the program for 20 or more years. Typically after 20 years of use, Social Security recipients begin to run out of savings.

The legacy of FDR

Roosevelt explained how his grandfather managed to work while being confined to a wheelchair prior to the Americans with Disabilities Act.

His grandmother, Eleanor Roosevelt, served as the eyes and ears of her husband, President Roosevelt. With the difficulties he faced when traveling, the first lady was able to go to more places and see the poverty being lived, first hand.

He said it was Eleanor Roosevelt who pushed the President to quickly act on poverty and social issues. He added the main goal of social security was to reduce poverty amongst the elderly and help families secure financial freedom.
