In December, a group of courageous Google workers banded together and decided they would try something yet to be accomplished, form a union within Google.
Communications Workers of America District 4 Director Frank Mathews discussed the mistreatment of big tech workers, how President-elect Joe Biden will help the labor community and more on America’s Work Force Union Podcast.
Alphabet Workers Union at Google
Mathews said it is important for those working for big tech companies to organize. It is easy to be swallowed up in these massively profitable companies and be taken advantage of. Organizing gives workers a voice and a seat at the table.
He said that tech workers are being pressed to do more, with the productivity being squeezed from them. They are overworking employees because they can.
At Google, employees started pushing back. A group got together and are fighting to organize with the Alphabet Workers Union, worrying the tech giant. In a desperate attempt to continue manipulating their workers, Google is asking that they organize through a company recommended source, which is not going to happen.
The unionization at Google follows nationwide trends, as more want to unionize.
Biden administration
Mathews is excited for what the Biden administration will bring to the table after four years of an anti-union administration.
He is excited about the nomination of Boston Mayor and LiUNA member Marty Walsh to Secretary of Labor. Additionally, all signs point to the PRO Act making its way to the President’s desk once he is sworn in and there is a new Congress.
