Former IAM official analyzes the first presidential debate

International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers former director of communications and public affairs Rick Sloan spoke with America’s Work Force Union Podcast on Sept. 30 about the presidential debate, battleground states and how the pandemic affected the workforce.

Presidential Debate

The first topic Sloan covered was the first presidential debate of the 2020 election cycle. He stated that President Trump showed that he is unfit to hold presidential responsibilities for a second term. He continued by stating his belief that Joe Biden will “win by an avalanche”.

While mentioning how confident he is in Joe Biden, Sloan added that Biden is gaining ground in battleground states. Sloan said this makes him certain that Biden will be able to win.

Battleground states are filled with blue collar workers who, before the last election, looked to President Trump to bring jobs back to the United States and strengthen worker rights and protections. As we have seen in the last three and a half years, President Trump fell short on his promises made to American workers and they are now looking to Joe Biden to be the voice of workers.

COVID-19 Impacting the Workforce

Sloan then discussed the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and its major effects on the workforce.

Many businesses closed or changed their means of operations to adhere to safety regulations and standards that were tightened up to protect workers. Sloan said everything that has happened has affected the workforce and the way people do their jobs, taking a toll on the economy.

He concluded by saying that whoever wins the election has a lot of work to do and has a great responsibility of getting things back to normal.
