Former International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers General President Tom Buffenbarger voiced his concerns about appointing a new Supreme Court Justice this close to an election, how Boeing took advantage of South Carolina and more on the Sept. 22 episode of America’s Work Force Union Podcast.
Buffenbarger started the episode by blasting Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell for his sudden change of heart over replacing a Supreme Court Justice during an election year.
He used the segment to bring attention to the fact that Senate Republicans have sat on the HEROES Act, denying much needed help to the American people. While not helping struggling Americans during a global pandemic, McConnell is willing to provide a speedy confirmation of another judicial appointment.
Boeing and South
Later in the segment, Buffenbarger explained how Boeing was able to build a manufacturing plant in South Carolina and what it has done to the state.
He said former Governor Nikki Haley sacrificed money earmarked for public school districts and gave it to Boeing in order to convince them to build in the state. Since South Carolina has a poor record of being friendly to unions, Boeing was eager to build.
When Boeing completed their plant and was ready to hire engineers and other workers, they ran into trouble as many individuals did not want to move their families to the state based on its poor quality of education.
Finally, Buffenbarger discussed the high levels of machinists who have seen their jobs disappear under the Trump administration.
