Expanding voting rights with new legislation

After the election, Republicans began introducing legislation that would make it harder for a person to obtain a ballot, in turn making it more difficult for it to be submitted on time and safely.

Steve Rosenfeld with the Independent Media Institute joined the AWF Union Podcast to discuss combatting this with H.R. 1.

Post-election environment

President Biden winning the election drew a lot of concern from Republicans, blaming voter fraud, illegal ballots, issues with mail-in voting, and many more conspiracies. In an attempt to end this so-called “voter fraud,” Republicans introduced legislation that would make it much more difficult to receive a ballot and would make the voting process much more difficult for people. Allegedly, it is an effort to deter people from voting.

Rosenfeld said that to combat this, H.R. 1 was introduced. H.R. 1, the For the People Act, would effectively expand voting rights, change campaign finance laws to reduce the influence of money in politics, limit partisan gerrymandering and create new ethics rules for federal officeholders. Voting is an American right and protecting that right is detrimental to our democracy.

The For the People Act would also fix gerrymandering issues that plague certain states, and be used to hold government officials accountable for their actions. It would keep a stricter look on what politicians do and what they try to get away with and punish those who do not follow the
rules.
