Educating, organizing and mobilizing Latino workers

Yanira Merino, President of the Labor Council for Latin American Achievement, joined the AWF Union Podcast to discuss the organization and how they are working to help organize Latino Workers.

Boost worker agenda

Merino explained that the goal of their organization is to promote the benefits of joining a union to Latino workers in hopes that it would help them understand and become more interested in such opportunities. She said they do this by working with both Latinos and others in their surrounding communities, promoting a pro-worker agenda.

Merino then discussed the importance of passing the PRO Act. The important legislation would solidify workers’ right to organize where they work, and grant them the opportunity to collectively bargain for contracts that protect their rights.

She explained how Latino and other immigrant workers are typically taken advantage of in the workforce. By helping them organize, these workers can stand their ground and gain needed protection from losing their job.

Getting communities engaged

Merino continued on to talk about the importance of getting their communities involved in politics. People are stronger when they work together and have more of a voice when they stand together. This starts with always showing up to vote, because elections matter.

Her organization also helps Latinos register for U.S. citizenship. By helping people through this sometimes difficult process, they are better positioned to be active and help make a difference both where they live and work.
