Kelly Dickey, President of the National Postal Mail Handlers Union (NPMHU) Local 322, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the downsizing of the U.S. Postal Service under Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, who was appointed by former President Trump.
Dickey predicted even longer delays this holiday season than the nation experienced last year. Under a 10-year plan, mail delivery is being deliberately slowed down by DeJoy — mail that previously had a three-day commitment now will take up to five days. This is mainly due to the fact that the Postal Service has stopped using planes to deliver mail and now primarily uses trucks, even for long distance delivery.
Records show this slowdown may indeed financially benefit DeJoy, who has financial investments in companies that help the Postal Service with this work, Dickey said. Documents show DeJoy has been found to have conflicts of interest relating to the company where he served as a chief executive, XPO Logistics, as well as 13 other major companies that have relationships with the Postal Service.
DeJoy and many Republicans in Congress have been trying to privatize the Postal Service, which will be a tremendous disservice to the American people if they are successful, said Dickey.
