Dr. Camillo Ricordi with the Diabetes Research Institute, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine spoke with America’s Work Force Radio Podcast on June 5 about umbilical cord derived mesenchymal stem cell research for COVID-19 and transplant surgeries to reverse diabetes.
Dr. Ricordi spoke about various forms of diabetes and the effects they have on the human body. He explained how diabetes is a much more serious illness than people think and results in thousands of deaths every year. Dr. Ricordi discussed the trial phases being completed to be able to reverse diabetes through a pancreatic transplant. He also spoke about using umbilical cords for stem cell research to find a cure for COVID-19. Although it is still in trial phases, Dr. Ricordi said by working with stem cells and examining the disease closely, they can work to find a cure for it.
Dorsey Hager, Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Columbus/Central Ohio Building and Construction Trades Council spoke about Columbus construction, politics that affect working people and the Dollars Against Diabetes (D.A.D.s) Clay Shoot. He said as more of the economy opens up, construction projects are resuming. Hager said jobsites are taking the illness seriously and if someone on the job tests positive for COVID-19, the job is getting shut down for a few days for cleaning. Hager also spoke about the D.A.D.s Clay Shoot being postponed until later in the year, and diabetes research.
