President Biden recently visited Cleveland, Ohio in an effort to promote the American Jobs Plan, an infrastructure plan designed to touch every corner of the U.S. and create good paying, long lasting jobs.
Ohio AFL-CIO President Tim Burga was excited about the visit and believes the president is doing a good job highlighting the industrial cities that stand to benefit the most. He joined AWF Union Podcast to discuss the visit and more.
Preparing for the Great Lakes District Council meeting
Burga said he is excited to get together with leaders in Ohio, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Michigan to discuss progress and what is ahead at the Great Lakes District Council meeting. AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka will also take part in the virtual event.
The progress and troubles of the past year will be discussed in great detail during the event. Burga also said legislation and needs will be discussed.
Promoting the American Jobs Plan
President Biden has been traveling to industrial, blue collar cities to promote his American Jobs Plan, with the most recent stop being in Cleveland. Burga said it was great to have the president recognize hard working Ohioans stand to gain from the bill.
However, Burga knows the proposal has a long way to go. Congressional Republicans missed their Memorial Day soft deadline to negotiate on the plan. Republicans seem to want all of their components without giving anything up, essentially negotiating in bad faith.
Burga later said the Democrats need to step up if Republicans refuse to work. Whether it be through budget reconciliation or nuking the filibuster rule, he said something needs to be done to make progress on an infrastructure plan and legislation such as the PRO Act.
