Congressional candidate makes her case to union members

Hillary O’Connor Mueri is a labor-friendly candidate for OH-14 who appeared on the Aug. 31 episode of America’s Work Force Radio Podcast to discuss her platform, her background as a Navy pilot and more.

Ohio District 14 is in northeast Ohio and includes the suburbs east of Cleveland and north of Youngstown, making for a very working class district.

Raised with union values

Mueri began the segment explaining how she grew up in a union household. Her mother was a teacher and her father was a United Auto Workers (UAW) member for more than half a century.

She told a brief story about an injury she suffered as she entered college and how it helped her realize healthcare as a human right.

According to a doctor, there was a chance she may not have been able to walk again due to her injuries. Thankfully for the quality healthcare her father had through the UAW, there was no decision to be made whether or not she was getting surgery, they took her in the next day.

She said nobody in this country should have to decide between going bankrupt and getting a surgery.

Working-class issues

Mueri then highlighted the other platforms of her campaign and how she will be a productive congresswoman.

She said she wants to focus on getting more unemployment benefits to those who have been heavily affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. She said what is being provided just is not enough to truly help people.

She tracked back to her story about her injury that required surgery. She said she plans on fixing inequalities in the healthcare system and ensuring constituents they can go to the hospital if they need to.

Lastly, she said she aims to protect the labor force through maintaining and expanding labor rights.
