Cleveland BBB warns of increased holiday scams due to the COVID-19 pandemic

With the holiday season quickly approaching, scammers are becoming more active. It is vital that consumers beware of scams and remain vigilant.

Cleveland Better Business Bureau (BBB) President Sue McConnell discussed some of the current and holiday scams already identified on America’s Work Force Union Podcast.

Holiday scams

The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly increased the amount of consumers turning to online shopping, with many more expected to shop online during the holiday season. This has caused an increase in scams.

McConnell said one scam to be on the lookout for involves the hot commodity items of the year, such as the Playstation 5 and Xbox. Scammers will advertise the product as deeply discounted or close to running out. The product the consumer receives is either a knockoff or not the expected item at all.

Similarly, McConnell warned of outright fake websites and sellers during the holiday season. She suggested shopping with a credit card. Using a credit card allows the consumer to dispute any charges and file a complaint if they fall victim to a scam.

McConnell essentially warned consumers to be wary of any unverified shopping websites.

Zoom scams

The COVID-19 pandemic has made Zoom one of the most popular services of 2020. Users have reported receiving emails, allegedly from Zoom, saying they need to click certain links to recover their account information. In reality, it is a scammer stealing the users information.
