Cleveland BBB warns listeners of COVID-19 stimulus and vaccine scams

With the news of the new stimulus package and the COVID-19 vaccine being rolled out throughout the country, scammers have expanded their reach to take advantage of people.

Cleveland Better Business Bureau President Sue McConnell joined America’s Work Force Union Podcast discussed various stimulus check scams, a vaccine scam and an advanced fee loan.

Stimulus check scam

McConnell said the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is not sending out text messages, emails or calls. Some Americans have reported receiving communications with a message saying click to claim your check. McConnell has confirmed this is a scam.

She said the IRS will not be contacting you via email with any clickable links to claim your stimulus check. Additionally, you will not be sent to a third-party site.

A less common scam is one where a scammer communicates with you to pay a certain amount of money in order to receive your check.

Vaccine scams

With the rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine and many desperate to receive it, scammers are beginning to take advantage of people. They send communication to people offering to ship them the vaccine.

Obviously, only a medical professional will administer the vaccine in a controlled setting.

Advanced fee loans

Lastly, McConnell talked about advanced fee loans. She advised listeners that the government is not giving out grants for loan fees, especially over Facebook Messenger.
