Celebrating Workers Memorial Day after a year in a global pandemic

Workers’ Memorial Day takes place on April 28. This annual day honors the men and women who have been severely injured or killed at work, while also recognizing the anniversary of the establishment of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration or OSHA.

Transportation Trades Department President Greg Regan joined America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss Workers’ Memorial Day and explain what the American Jobs Plan will do for the public transportation industry.

The American Jobs Plan and public transportation

Regan said the public transportation industry will receive a large boost in funding through the American Jobs Plan, which is President Joe Biden’s infrastructure plan. Much of the funding will go towards improving roads, bridges and long distance transit systems such as Amtrak, which is what Regan feels needs the most immediate attention.

One of the main sticking points of the American Jobs Plan is the scope of what is considered infrastructure. Besides items such as roads and bridges, the bill also defines broadband internet expansion and healthcare as infrastructure.

Regan said any investment in infrastructure is a good one, as it has been needed for years.

Celebrating Workers Memorial Day

With Workers Memorial Day quickly approaching, Regan wants to honor all of the transportation workers who have been resilient throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

He discussed a video series being produced by the Transportation Trades Department titled #COVIDTransportationStories. In the series, transportation workers will speak candidly about their experiences working throughout the pandemic and the troubles they have encountered.
