Butch Lewis Act gains traction under new Democratic Congressional majority

Retired Americans are constantly under attack from politicians. New ideas are constantly thrown around to cut or eliminate social security and Medicare, while pensions also come under attack.

Standing up for the retired is Rich Fiesta, Executive Director of the Alliance for Retired Americans. Fiesta joined AWF Union Podcast to discuss new legislation targeted at social security and Medicare and the Butch Lewis Act.

Social Security and Medicare “Rescue Committees”

U.S. Senator Mitt Romney, who has recently gained some clout with the Democratic Party, has now turned to indirectly attacking social security and Medicare.

Fiesta said Sen. Romney has introduced legislation, which would seek to establish 12-member “rescue committees” to solve problems associated with funds, such as social security and Medicare.

Fiesta said the Alliance for Retired Americans stands against this legislation because it would allow these so-called committees to attack the funds that support America’s retired citizens.

Passing the Butch Lewis Act

He used the second half of his segment to advocate the passing of the Butch Lewis Act, which would keep multi-employer pensions solvent for 30 years.

While Republicans have constantly attacked the legislation, saying it is a union bailout, Fiesta said this is not true. Multi-employer pensions are managed by both labor groups and management.
