BlueGreen Alliance claims Trump administration has abandoned workers

Finding common ground between environmental issues and labor issues is becoming more common, as factions within the Democratic Party attempt to phase out fossil fuels. BlueGreen Alliance Executive Director Jason Walsh Spoke discussed this topic and how the Trump administration has left workers behind on America’s Work Force Union Podcast.

Who is the BlueGreen Alliance?

Walsh said the BlueGreen Alliance, which was founded in 2006 by the United Steelworkers and the Sierra Club, is a coalition of labor unions and environmental organizations.

He said their work mostly focuses on creating policy and crafting a climate action plan to identify economic inequality and the climate crisis. According to Walsh, they are ultimately searching for ways to create high quality union jobs in renewable energy.

Mislead: The Impact of the Trump Administration on Working Families and the Environment

new study developed by the BlueGreen Alliance was completed after watching the Trump administration dismantle the health and safety protections of workers.

Walsh said they wanted to publicly walk through the ways the administration has endangered workers, increased pollution and has lost jobs. The report looks at the downsizing of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), sending people back to work despite a lack of COVID-19 protections, removal of environmental regulations and more.

In addition to the study, Walsh spoke to the resurgence of black lung within the coal mining industry, despite a loss of 18 percent of the mining workforce. There is no plan to increase the funding of the Black Lung Trust Fund.

Accelerating deregulation

Walsh said the Trump administration has been fast forwarding deregulation in the past year. He said they are using the media coverage of the election and social justice movement to carry out their agenda.

This administration, he believes, has done anything and everything to maximize corporate profits at the expense of working people.
