As all 50 states have certified their election results, the Biden-Harris administration is beginning to select cabinet members, while speculation as to who will occupy other positions begins.
Progressive Populist Editor Jim Cullen joined America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss his January editorial. The editorial explains who has been selected for cabinet positions and who is expected to be selected as the Jan. 20 inauguration ceremony nears.
Biden-Harris cabinet picks
Cullen said President-elect Biden has to be careful in who he chooses for cabinet positions. With the Senate being so hotly contested, it will be important not to remove any vulnerable Democrats from their roles to serve as cabinet members.
Additionally, Biden has to worry about what will happen if Republicans and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell retain their Senate majority. Biden will likely have a hard time getting cabinet members confirmed, as McConnell has weaponized the Senate since taking the majority and promising to block anything the Obama administration wanted done.
Cullen believes that Janet Yelen was a great choice for Treasury-Secretary, as it allows Elizabeth Warren, another frontrunner for the position, the ability to stay in the Senate.
The cabinet member with perhaps the most work to do, is Alejandro Mayorkas. As Secretary of Homeland Security, Cullen believes he will have a lot of work to do regarding cleaning up some of the cruel, hardline immigration policies implemented by the current administration.
Essentially, it could come down to who has control of the Senate. As previously stated, if McConnell is the Majority Leader, it may be bad news for Democrats, as McConnell will almost certainly block the nomination of anyone who is left of center and not perceived to be a moderate.
