Biden ends mass workplace raids and refocuses U.S. immigration priorities

Marcy Goldstein-Gelb, co-executive director of the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health (National COSH), joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the Biden Administration’s freeze on mass workplace raids by U.S. immigration agencies and instead turn their efforts toward cracking down on employers who abuse undocumented workers.

National COSH is a coalition of 23 COSH groups who focus their efforts on fighting for safe and healthy working conditions.

She also spoke about President Biden’s efforts to refocus federal agencies resources on punishing employers for violating work code violations, rather than on the workers employed illegally. If employers fail to pay proper wages or cannot provide workers a safe working environment within the scope of their job, the penalties will be severe. It is a groundbreaking effort and is the exact opposite approach taken by the previous administration, Goldstein-Gelb said.

She also discussed efforts by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to improve working conditions for employees in hot environments, particularly given the recent spike in temperatures driven by climate change.
