As the COVID-19 vaccine begins to be distributed to the public, healthcare workers hope help is on the way after working some of the most difficult months of their careers.
United Steelworkers (USW) Health Care Workers’ Council Coordinator Tamara Lefcowitz joined America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the safety of healthcare workers and the early stages of the vaccine rollout.
Healthcare worker safety
Early in the pandemic, a lot was demanded of healthcare workers. The novelty of COVID-19 made it more difficult for healthcare workers to be as safe as they needed to be.
Despite the unknown, these workers dawned the personal protective equipment that they were given, or sometimes supplied themselves and fought the pandemic head on.
As the pandemic progressed and the medical community learned more, they were able to better equip themselves, though the work remains difficult and dangerous.
The COVID-19 vaccine rollout has brought hope to many that normal life will soon return. As it is rolled out, Lefcowitz said it is smart to prioritize healthcare workers for the vaccine.
