With much of American society being politicized in recent years, making voting safer amidst a pandemic has been the latest casualty to politicization.
Alliance for Retired Americans (ARA) Executive Director Rich Fiesta joined AWF Union Podcast to discuss how they are fighting to make it easier and safer for senior citizens to safely cast their ballot in the upcoming election.
Throughout the United States the ARA has opened lawsuits or has launched initiatives to make it easier to vote.
Fiesta said that some states have set up requirements forcing voters to have witnesses sign the ballot of an absentee voter. This creates a hazard and conflict. With seniors being told to remain isolated, many of them are hesitant to come in close contact with others in order to have them sign their ballot.
Fiesta said every lawsuit they open to ease some of these restrictions are met by republican opposition with either a counter campaign or a counter lawsuit.
Later, Fiesta used Montana as an example of one of the lawsuits the ARA is involved in. In Montana, the postal service is being sued after they announced delays on expedited shipping for ballots. In order for accurate results, ballots need to get in and be counted as soon as possible.
