The Alliance for Retired Americans Executive Director Rich Fiesta discussed the importance of the payroll tax, voting by mail and more on the Sept. 18 episode of America’s Work Force Union Podcast.
Plans for the payroll tax
Fiesta spoke of the potential problems with permanently removing the payroll tax, as President Trump has promised to do if reelected.
He said the Biden campaign has laid out clear plans for money to come into the social security trust fund. Fiesta said this money will come from higher earners paying a fair share. These increased funds will improve benefits for some social security beneficiaries, keeping them off of public assistance.
This has turned into positive campaign numbers for Joe Biden. Fiesta said the enthusiasm in Florida has shifted from President Trump in 2016 to almost a dead even race in the sunshine state.
Voting wins and problems at the Post Office
Fiesta then talked about a legal battle the Alliance for Retired Americans is involved in. He said the Alliance is involved in litigation in eight states.
The first win was delivered when the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled that ballots postmarked by election day will be counted three days after the election. He said this is win because it helps seniors vote without having to wait in lines at the polls during a global pandemic.
Another win in Pennsylvania came in the form of ballot drop-boxes being located throughout counties, not just at board of elections buildings. He said this will help more people have an easier time casting their ballot.
Finally, Fiesta suggested all Americans vote early or vote by mail.
