Apprenticeship safety training critical to industrial boiler maintenance

Keith Thurner, Business Manager and Financial Secretary for the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 95, joined America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the IUOE’s training program and the importance of safety in managing and maintaining industrial boiler units.

The IUOE’s training center provides the tools to make members more valuable to employers by keeping up with changing technology and evolving safety standards. Safety standards are key, especially when it comes to operating a boiler, Thurner said. Someone not operating a sizable industrial boiler correctly could take out half a city block, he added.

Like many industries, the IUOE is struggling with a shortage of workers. Getting workers to understand the importance of training early and often can be a difficult hurdle to overcome, Thurner said.

Thurner also spoke about the recently passed infrastructure bill. He said the legislation will provide good jobs for IUOE members in the building and maintenance phases.
