Analysis: Ford secures $1 billion in subsidies for EV plant in Tennessee

Arlene Martinez, Communications Director at Good Jobs First, joined America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss subsidies the state of Tennessee has given Ford and SK Innovation to develop a $5.6 billion electric vehicle (EV) assembly and battery plant at the Memphis Regional Megasite in Stanton, Tenn.

Good Jobs First is a national policy resource center that tracks subsidies to promote accountability in economic development.

The state of Tennessee has pledged over $500 million to be given as a grant to the two companies, but a Good Jobs First analysis indicates the real value is around $1 billion when regional subsidies and energy subsidies are added to the total.

Tennessee is a strong So-Called “Right to Work” state that does not have a Prevailing Wage law, so the quality of jobs created by this project may be subpar, Martinez said.

Martinez also talked about a $440 million tax incentive from the City of Fort Worth, Texas that may be given to Rivian, an EV manufacturer that is 30 percent owned by Amazon. The deal would exempt the company from paying property taxes until 2031.
