Public education has come under fire nationwide according to American Federation of Teachers Vice President and Ohio Federation of Teachers President Melissa Cropper. She appeared on America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss elections in Ohio and why Joe Biden is a better candidate for public schools.
Ohio School Board election
In the state of Ohio, Cropper said members of the Ohio School Board are being called socialists by their colleagues for passing a resolution on racial equity. Cropper said the resolution is aimed at making education more inclusive for all of Ohio’s students and developing a curriculum that encompasses all.
She said the loudest voices on the state board who are against public education have never worked in public education. They are homeschoolers who were homeschooled, former politicians and teachers and administrators of private charter schools.
Ohio Supreme Court
Cropper said supporters of public education need to vote all the way down the ticket. She said the incumbents on the court are vocal supporters of voucher programs, which funnels public funding away from public schools and into private charter schools.
She added these judges are not labor friendly and will turn their backs on all working people, not just teachers and other public educators.
Cropper said public school supporters need to get out and vote for Joe Biden for U.S. President. She said a Biden Harris administration will be massively beneficial to public schools and public school educators. She added Biden has a personal connection to public education through his wife, Jill, who is a professor at Northern Virginia Community College.
According to Cropper, Biden will triple Title 1 funding, which is the largest federal aid program for public schools. She said the majority of the funding goes to the poorest public schools and to special education programs. Tripling this funding will take a burden off local taxpayers, who are constantly asked to pay for levies and allow them to keep more of their money.
