AFL-CIO Legislative Director discusses weak HEALS Act stimulus package

Ohio AFL-CIO Legislative Director Matt Smith came on America’s Work Force Radio Podcast to discuss the weak Republican counter to the HEROES Act.

Senate Republicans have crafted the HEALS Act, a counter to the house stimulus package titled, the HEROES Act.

Smith said the HEROES Act would have provided great support for America’s working class. The HEROES Act would have secured hazard pay for frontline workers, unemployment benefits of $600 per week and much more.

The HEROES Act

Since being passed in late May by the House of Representatives, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has let the bill sit on his desk without bringing it to vote.

The HEALS Act

Instead of voting on the HEROES Act, Sen. McConnell is instead attempting to pass the HEALS Act. Smith said the HEALS Act offers zero dollars of relief for the financially strained postal service, state and local governments hazard pay and only offers $200 extra dollars for the unemployed.

Another key factor of the HEALS Act is liability protection. With the HEALS Act, workers and customers will not be able to sue companies if they are to become infected with COVID-19 while working or patronizing the business.

Smith described the Republican package insulting to the working class who have been devastated by the pandemic.

He ensured listeners that the Labor Federation will continue to support the HEROES Act and demand a stimulus package that benefits the working class.
