$5.6 billion Ford EV plant to bring nearly 6,000 jobs to Tennessee

Ironworkers Local 167 Business Manager/Financial Secretary-Treasurer James Cole joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss plans by Ford Motor Co. to build a $5.6 billion electric vehicle plant in Stanton, Tenn.

The project will create BlueOval City, a vertically integrated ecosystem for Ford to assemble an expanded lineup of electric F-Series vehicles and will include a plant, key suppliers and recycling. Ford’s new Tennessee assembly plant is designed to be carbon neutral with zero waste to landfill once fully operational.

The 3,600-acre campus, covering nearly 6 square miles, will be a game changer for Tennessee, Cole said. Over the next 10 years, it will create close to 6,000 jobs. By the end of the year, 600 ironworkers as well as 3,500 skilled craft workers will be needed for the construction of the campus, which will last through 2025.

Workers have broken ground on the site, much of which is farmland, he said. Since the area is farmland, infrastructure will need to be created. By summer, Cole expects concrete to be poured and steel erections to begin.

Construction work throughout the south is currently booming, he added.

The Local 167 jurisdiction covers a 200-mile radius around Memphis, including Tennessee, Arkansas, Missouri and Mississippi — all So-Called “Right to Work” states.
