On June 19, Willie Haywood, Jr., American Federation of Government Employees Local 31 joined America’s Work Force to discuss VA medical centers.
Haywood spoke about the National Veterans Affairs Council and the services that they provide for veterans. He then went on to talk about Veteran Administrations and the employees low morale. The morale of the employees at the VA has gone drastically decreased because of the many attempts to privatize the industry, the union busting activity going on, and the lack of collective bargaining rights. He stated that VA center employees have the right of representation and to bargain collectively for themselves and how they just want to help out their fellow veterans, the best they can.
Michael Chastain, Ohio Department of Job and Family Service Provider, spoke to AWF on June 19 about veteran assistance services. He talked about the veteran apprenticeship service provider and how they help find stable, viable jobs for veterans to help them get back on their feet. Services that they provide involve workshops to help veterans acquire the necessary skills to rejoin the workforce and be able to hold down a steady job. Chastain said that their resource center includes on-the-job training, and related classroom instruction that could count towards college credits.
AWF host Ed “Flash” Ferenc talked about AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka going on a three-state tour to speak at town hall meetings about the new NAFTA and why he thinks that it is still incomplete and not thorough enough on worker protections.
