Shaun Richman, contributing writer with In These Times Magazine spoke with America’s Work Force on Jan. 1 about union organizing.
Richman talked about Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act, which strengthens laws that allow and protect workers and their rights to organize a union and bargain for their contracts. He also explained the benefits of having a union, and why a union will better assist workers in voicing their ideas to their company. Richman said that with unions, the bargaining process is more thorough, in that they can accept or reject deals made by their companies and bargain, in fairness, their personal needs and wants. Lastly, he talked about Socialism and what it means in the United States today.
Wade Rathke, chief organizer at ACORN International spoke about the National Labor Relations Board. He discussed worker protections that were implemented by the NLRB during President Barack Obama’s terms in office and how some of those protections have been rolled back during President Trump’s term in office. Rathke also explained the benefits of being in a union and how they fight to protect workers rights and give some power back to the workers.
AWF host Ed “Flash” Ferenc spoke about 21 out of the 50 states increasing their state minimum wage every year.
