Malcolm Burnley, senior writer for the Fuller Project and contributing writer to TIME magazine spoke with America’s Work Force on Sept. 5 to discuss the tipped minimum wage.
Burnley focused on servers who receive tipped minimum wage and how they may not receive the federal minimum wage per hour after receiving their tip. He said the tipped minimum wage is under $2.20 and some patrons do not tip their servers, causing them to miss out and not even make it close to earning minimum wage. Burnley said the problem is not just the patrons, although they should tip a worker who provides a service for them, but the problem is there being a tipped minimum wage put in place, rather than just letting them earn the federal minimum wage. You can’t put the responsibility on the patrons to ensure your employees will earn the minimum wage, and that is why it is a flawed method of payment. He also discussed how the tipped minimum wage doesn’t make up for all of the sexual harassment and abuse these workers receive from customers.
Ohio senator, Kenny Yuko spoke to AWF on Sept. 5 to discuss red flag laws for purchasing firearms. Lawmakers continue to ask themselves what could be done to prevent all of these mentally inept people who show signs of harming themselves or others from being able to possess a firearm and came up with red flag laws. Red flag laws say that if a person is showing signs of being a danger to themselves, or society, their guns are legally allowed to be taken away from them, temporarily. Senator Yuko also discussed Ohio House Bill 6, the nuclear bailout bill, and the referendum that could possibly overturn it.
AWF host Ed “Flash” Ferenc spoke about Representative Tim Ryan being upset with President Trump for reallocating billions of dollars from the military fund into the construction of the southern border wall.
