Ohio Budget Discussed on America’s Work Force

Zach Schiller, researcher for Policy Matters Ohio, spoke with America’s Work Force on June 13 about Ohio’s budget plan and the problems that he sees within it.

Policy Matters Ohio Amy HanauerOhio’s gas tax raise, which becomes effective July 2019, is a plan to use money from the gas tax to help improve and repair infrastructure throughout the state. Schiller also discussed the “LLC Loophole” where there is no income tax collected on the first $200,000 that a Limited Liability Company makes. Schiller said that because of this loophole, some small businesses are naming themselves LLCs so they can have this tax break. He then went on to discuss the tax cut being increased to eight percent and why this is a bad idea. Schiller stated that Ohio is lagging economically and the tax cuts are not helping, stressing because of the tax cuts, we do not have the proper funding for resources needed to make improvements, yet tax cuts are still being proposed.

UAW United Auto WorkersJosh Nassar, legislative director for the United Auto Workers spoke with AWF on June 13 about the new NAFTA agreement, the United States-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement. He said that the White House claims they are ready to move on to a vote with congress to make it official. Nassar asserted that he does not believe that the U.S.M.C.A is not thorough enough, or completed and should not be put up to vote yet. Lastly, he discussed Protect the Right to Work (PRO) Act and why it is so necessary to have.

AWF host Ed “Flash” Ferenc spoke about getting the price of pharmaceutical drugs under control and how the U.S.M.C.A could prevent the prices from skyrocketing even more.

Josh Nassar, United Auto Workers Legislative Director, joined America’s Work Force Radio and talked about the effect of the United States-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement on the auto industry.

United Auto Workers Josh NassarNassar said the new trade pact is not strong enough to protect U.S. autoworkers. He felt the point of renegotiating NAFTA (the North American Free Trade Agreement) was to lead to additional investment in domestic auto plants and the creation more jobs in the U.S., which would result in the shutdown of fewer automotive plants. Nassar then discussed the upcoming new congress term and issues lawmakers will focus on, such as Medicare for all, drug costs and pre-existing conditions.

Policy Matters Ohio Amy HanauerZach Schiller, Research Director with Policy Matters Ohio, appeared on AWF on Dec. 13 and spoke about the lame duck session of the Ohio legislature.
