United States-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement Discussed on America’s Work Force

Independent labor voice, Tom Buffenbarger from the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, appeared on the Dec. 26 edition of America’s Work Force.

Buffenbarger joined AWF to discuss the new NAFTA, U.S.-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement, and areas that he feels could be improved. He said that the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement (USMCA) does not look out for the skilled laborer and only ‘toward business owners who are looking out for themselves over their workers.’ Buffenbarger also discussed the government shutdown and the repercussions it is having on government employees.

A clip of Congressman Tim Ryan speaking on the House floor was the second feature on the Dec. 26 edition of AWF. During his speech, Ryan talked about the General Motors Lordstown plant ending production. Further discussion ensued about how this halt in production is affecting the workers and the surrounding area. He said ‘the working class is suffering while the top 1 percent continues to do well.’

AWF host Ed “Flash” Ferenc spoke about Sears’ executives taking bonuses rather than paying severance to workers who were laid off after the company filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Outgoing Commissioner Remembers His Time in the Public Service Sector on America’s Work Force.

On Dec. 24, Dan Troy, Outgoing Lake Country (OH) Commissioner, spoke about his fondest moments serving on the Ohio Legislature and as Lake County Commissioner during his feature on America’s Work Force Radio.

Troy, who served 14 years on the Ohio Legislature and 20 as Lake County Commissioner discussed his proudest moments working in the public service sector. He talks proudly of his time working on environmental pieces such as phosphorus reduction acts and solid waste laws tightening requirements on landfills. Overall during his time in the public sector he said he was most proud about the stability created in the county, their fiscal responsibility, and they delivered services that they had promised. Troy also spoke about people developing myopic views created by only paying attention to one media news outlet rather than diversifying and absorbing different viewpoints and creating your own opinion.

Transportation Trades Department AFL-CIO

Larry Willis from the Transportation Trades Department also appeared on the Dec. 24 edition of AWF. Willis discussed Amtrak closing their call center in Riverside, California and moving to Florida in what seems like a classic union busting tactic. According to Willis, “500 good paying union jobs will be lost and the new workers will not be receiving health or pension benefits and will also be taking a pay cut.” Willis also said that the workers losing their jobs in Riverside will be training the new employees from Florida who will be taking their jobs.
