Problems With Boeing Discussed on America’s Work Force

Tom Buffenbarger, former general president of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers joined America’s Work Force on July 23 to discuss issues Boeing is having with their workers.

IAM International Association of Machinists and Aerospace WorkersBuffenbarger discussed Boeing Company outsourcing their software programming to India where workers are earning nine dollars an hour. There are many things wrong with this situation, according to Buffenbarger. He said that the workers are non-union, and nowhere near as thoroughly trained with the software as IAM members are. This is a safety hazard, not just to the workers, but also to the people who will fly on these planes. One major complaint that Buffenbarger had about Boeing outsourcing software programming, other than not using trained union members, is that it is an obvious stunt to increase profits. By outsourcing, they are saving money on labor, and thus increasing their potential profits. Lastly, he spoke about the newly elected leader of the Department of Labor, Eugene Scalia, and what he thinks the future of American workers will be with him in charge.

CCVSC Cuyahoga County Veterans Service CommissionJon Reiss, executive director of the Cuyahoga County Veteran Services Commission joined AWF to discuss their financial assistance applications. He said that the CCVSC is a hardship-based organization and steps in to help veterans when they are going through tough times and need financial assistance. Reiss detailed what a person would need to bring when visiting the CCVSC office, if they were applying for the financial assistance program.

AWF host Ed “Flash” Ferenc discussed the Ohio state budget, which was due at the beginning of July, and how Mike DeWine, Governor of Ohio, just signed off on the budget last week.

America’s Work Force Discusses the Benefits of Hiring Union

Tom Buffenbarger, former general president of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers spoke to America’s Work Force on April 23 about the benefits of using union workers.

IAM International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers

Buffenbarger first spoke about Machinists Local 912 and their unanimous strike authorization vote at General Electric. He said that G.E. began to resent the unions for sticking together to bargain for their own rights and protections and that he was proud of the union for not letting the corporation walk all over them. Buffenbarger then talked about Boeing in North Carolina remaining non-union but are bringing in International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers to show their employees the proper way to build, repair and maintain the 737 jets. Boeing continues to bring in union members to show their employees how to do the work, but won’t hire the union workers for full-time work. He mentioned that clearly, Boeing recognizes the quality of training and experience these union members have, but still won’t agree that hiring union is beneficial to the company.

CCVSC Cuyahoga County Veterans Service Commission

Jon Reiss from the Cuyahoga County Veteran Service Commission spoke with AWF on April 23 about their dental, vision and hearing aid program. He said that the CCVSC offers this program as one of their financial services and is even available to the wives of veterans. Reiss then discussed the CCVSC hiring veterans to further follow their mission statement of “veterans serving veterans.”

AWF host Ed “Flash” Ferenc discussed the Stop N Shop strike, which ended this week, after union members and customers showed incredible solidarity and stood up for their own rights and protections against a big company.
