Plain Dealer Contract Negotiations Discussed on America’s Work Force

Sam Allard, senior writer with Cleveland Scene magazine, discussed ongoing contract negotiations between The Plain Dealer and Northeast Ohio Newspaper Guild during his appearance on the Dec. 27 edition of America’s Work Force.

Allard discussed the potential layoffs of union employees from The Plain Dealer newsroom during the centralization of production operations. Currently, The Plain Dealer and the Newspaper Guild are going through contract negotiations. According to Allard, one proposal from Plain Dealer management included cutting 23 jobs and sending that work to the centralized facility. Allard then talked about the union’s counter-proposal, leaving out specific details, that would cut necessary costs without outsourcing jobs. He said they expect The Plain Dealer to respond to the counter-proposal by the end of the year.

Also on the program, AWF host Ed “Flash” Ferenc discussed the Suragroh melon farm having their Fair Trade USA certification revoked. A Honduras division of Fyffe, Suragroh was the number one supplier of winter season fruits and melons to the United States. The de-certification occurred after the discovery of poor working conditions at certain facilities and wage theft from their employees.
