Increasing Teacher’s Salary was the Main Topic of Discussion on America’s Work Force

Lily Eskelsen Garcia, president of the National Education Association spoke with America’s Work Force on April 30 about increasing teacher’s wages to adjust to inflation.

Garcia first spoke about teacher salaries throughout the United States and how it has not been keeping up with the rate of inflation. She said that the average teacher salary is down four percent in the past decade after accounting in the inflation rate. Because of this, a large amount of teachers have been forced to find a second or, in some causes, third job in order to make ends meet. Furthermore, the profession is having a hard time attracting people into it and having a harder time retaining teachers. Garcia also talked about the problems with charter schools and how they are drastically affecting funding for public schools.
