Today’s Show 10-02-18

Today on the show we had two guests, Jason Perlman and Dr. Elizabeth Rosenthal. Jason Perlman is a political director with the Ohio AFL-CIO and Dr. Elizabeth Rosenthal is a dermatologist!

Our first guest on the show was Mr. Jason Perlman and during his time, he talks about Dewine and Cordray and what each of them are bringing to the table for the working person. He goes on to say that Dewine has been anti-worker in the past and is constantly trying to take away worker rights, however, both stated that they would veto right to work. He finishes his time on the show talking about the ECOT scandal and how Dewine did nothing while the online school was lying about enrollment and was ultimately stealing from people.

Our second guest was Dr. Elizabeth Rosenthal. Dr. Rosenthal, who spent 38 years practicing dermatology, talks about healthcare and single payer healthcare. Dr. Rosenthal is the daughter of a doctor and the granddaughter of a doctor, so she knows all about how healthcare has changed over the years. She discusses expanding medicare for all by taking out the private parts, and keep the public parts and give them to everybody; publicly funded, privately delivered.

We also discuss President Trump and the new NAFTA negotiations, how they want to get rid of NAFTA and rename it USMCA (United States Mexico Canada Agreement), how the new NAFTA negotiations will modernize trade rules and make it easier for workers to form unions in Mexico, Postal Workers management agreed to extend bargaining for another month, car prices may rise soon and selection may decrease, and finally putting the interest of working families first. Nice little change of pace in the topics of discussion on the show today!

Today’s Show 10-01-18

on our show today, we had guests Mark Gruenberg and Sue McConnell. Our first guest Mark Gruenberg is head Washington DC’s bureau of People’s World and also an editor of Press Associations Inc. During his time on the show, Mark talks about the Brett Kavanaugh hearing, people calling the senate and telling them to believe the survivors, Labor Federations, and the Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW) all speaking against Kavanaugh. Gruenberg also talks about the executive court orders being overturned and now how they are being appealed and he explains that federal workers cannot bargain over their pay, contracts with the middle class, Cordray and Dewine race, and a Blue Wave. Our second guest on the show was Sue McConnell from the Bureau of Better Business. Today, Sue talked about new scams going on with fake check scams and car wrap scams. People are being sent fraudulent checks from companies that they think are trustworthy, depositing the bogus checks, taking money out and sending it to a third party business involved in the scam, and then having to pay the bank back when they find out the check was fake. Last year, the public lost over $60 million from these fake check scandals and that does not include scams that were not reported! She also talks about doing research before sending money to Natural Disaster Relief charities because some may not be trustworthy and keep the money, and she finishes her time on the show talking about children’s identities being stolen and their credit scores being ruined. We also talk about Labor 411 celebrating a decade of making a difference for workers, and supporting businesses who treat their workers well and provide good pay, benefits, etc. A lot of interesting stuff on the show today!

Today’s Show 9-28-18

Today on the show we had Michelle Tokarczyk and Tom Conway. Our first guest, Michelle, is an English professor at Goucher College, she is also a writing director at Goucher. Along with that, she is an author and a poet, with topics focusing on women and working class studies. While on the show, she discusses her writings and the inspiration behind them, recessions, working class decimation, teachers organizing, and textbook costs and university tuition. Our second guest on the show was Tom Conway from the United Steel Workers. Conway goes immediately into talking about how the steel workers are ready to go on strike, the steel industry’s success and how they are not giving anything to the workers, how some of the worker protections were taken away, deductible healthcare plans, and finally how they are hoping to solve their problems during contract renegotiation. Other things that we discussed today were the Brett Kavanaugh controversy, a labor podcast called “Women Rule”, and shared prosperity.

Transportation Trades Department

On Monday, September 24th, we had guest Larry Willis from the Transportation Trades Department on the show. During his time on the show, he discussed outsourcing freight rail jobs and undermining safety and how it is a big mistake. Willis also discussed KCSR’s pending application with the FRA to conduct brake inspections in Mexico, which would eliminate a key safety check before trains cross the border and lay the groundwork for the outsourcing of good, middle-class rail jobs, all while violating federal law. The Transportation Trades Department wrote an article about his time on America’s Workforce Radio and posted it to their website.

Today’s Show 9-27-18

Today’s show featured guests Bill Samuel and Sam Allard. Bill Samuel is with the AFL-CIO and Sam Allard is a senior writer with the Cleveland Scene Magazine. Our first guest on the show, Bill Samuel, talks politics with Cordray and Dewine and also the senate race and Sherrod Brown. He then talks about worker’s rights, OSHA, Kavanaugh’s stance on the working people, and Seaworld and their poor support and protection of their workers. He then gets into the Butch Lewis Act to talk about benefits for retirees, and finishes his time with discussion on NAFTA negotiations and where those are leading. Our second guest Sam Allard discusses what “opportunity zones” are and why they need to have better regulations put onto them. To conclude his time on the show, Allard talks about the podcast called “Serial” and talks about our criminal justice system. We also talk about the Brett Kavanaugh controversy, how the new NAFTA negotiations involve incentives with outsourcing, the Janus decision and right to work foundations, and an elected state federation’s first woman president!

Today’s show featured guests Tom Buffenbarger, former head of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers and currently our independent labor voice, and Fred Yoder, a farmer from Plain City, Ohio. Our first guest on the show is a frequent guest, Tom Buffenbarger, who talks about the farm bills in Ohio, the Kavanaugh controversy, tariffs on crops, CEO pay compared to their employees, steelworkers struggling to bargain for their contracts, President Trump and his tax cuts, and going out and exercising your right to vote. Our second guest is a fourth generation farmer from just outside of Columbus named Fred Yoder. Yoder came onto the show today to talk about the farm bills in Ohio that get updated every five years, farmers getting hurt by these tariffs, crop insurance and cover crops, and the Federal Crop insurance where farmers and the government split the costs 50/50. We also discuss an uprising of women organizing, the Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW), League of Women Voters, and McDonald’s and their sexual harassment reports going unheard so the workers staged walkouts.

Today’s Show 9-24-18

On the show today, we had the Lake County Commissioner, Dan Troy, as well as the President of the Transportation Trades Department, Larry Willis.

During his time on the show, our first guest Dan Troy talked about Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and all of the controversy surrounding the organization, social security benefits, tax cuts, immigration issues, slander speech, the importance of exercising your right to vote, and being honored during Pipefitters Local 120 ceremony. Congratulations Dan!

Our second guest today was Larry Willis and he discussed the campaign against the Federal Railroad Administration and the Federal Railroad Safety Act, issues with the United States rail and freight industry, break inspections and other safety sensitive training, and how some politicians are out to defame each other during the elections.

We also discuss work without pay, CEO to worker pay ratio, a caucus happening discussing tax cuts, Hurricane Florence and it’s destruction, Unions helping those they need in the Carolinas, and more on the Brett Kavanaugh sexual assault allegations. A great show today with great topics of discussion!

On the show today, we had Mark Seavey from the American Legion Magazine and Richard Fiesta from the Alliance of Retired Americans. While on the show, our first guest Mark talks about a major problem going on with a VA Medical Center project in Denver going over budget and people are thinking it is intentionally being sabotaged by putting things in it that are not necessary and not focusing on what actually needs to be put into it. Mark also talks about the Blue Water Bill and how scientists are saying there is no direct link to all the cases of cancer going on. Our second guest Richard Fiesta talks a lot about social security, social security caucus going on right now, how we can expand, strengthen, and fix the benefits, raising the artificial earnings cap, raising the retiring age, tax cuts, and the senate race. We also discuss momentum in favor of labor, the governor race, and the investigation into ECOT!

Today on the show we had Doug Oplinger, retired editor from Akron Beacon Journal, and Pat Gallagher, from District 1 Steelworkers. While on the show today, Doug talks about Your Voice Ohio, encouraging people to help out and start supporting their local news, opiod problems, and the average household income dropping. Our second guest Pat talks about the governor race in Ohio, the steel industry and the profit they are making, steelworkers in strike mode right now because they are unhappy with the lack of wage increases and other benefits, and his thoughts on the tariffs and how they are affecting our economy. We also talk about kick starting the economy and the economy shift in Ohio, the Cordroy and Dewine debate, drug victims and the addiction crisis, and holding politicians accountable for their actions.

Today on the show we had Tony Reardon, President of the National Treasury Employees Union, and Tish O’dell, community organizer from the Akron, Ohio area. Our first guest, Tony, talks about the historic union victory over executive orders and what it means for unions moving forward, working people’s voices finally being heard, IRS workers, the possibility of government shut down, President Trump wanting a pay freeze while other federal employees want a pay increase and unions against Kavanaugh. Our second guest Tish talks about having a community forum with topics on fair elections, sustainability, worker rights, police accountability, mass incarceration, and legalization of marijuana. She also talks about how people WANT to make a difference in their communities, they just need to be better educated on hot topics, and how communities should be funding drug treatment over mass incarceration since it is cheaper for the tax payer. we also discuss federal pay raises for next year, accusations against Kavanaugh, and how First Energy Nuclear Operations are planning to give generous bonuses to employees working until the plant shuts down in 2020!
